Church InstallationBreaking New Ground: The RCCG City of David Installation in Lagos
The RCCG City of David project was done on behalf of Wild & Marr, a reputable name in professional audio distribution based in South Africa. The scope of work covered both live sound reinforcement in the auditorium and the complete setup of a purpose-built recording studio—an impressive undertaking for the time and location.
Auditorium Sound System at RCCG City of David: Power and Precision
At the heart of the RCCG City of David facility is its main auditorium—a large, vibrant space that accommodates a growing congregation and frequently hosts major services, concerts, and events. One of our primary tasks was the installation of the auditorium’s sound system. We deployed JBL point-source speakers to deliver powerful, articulate sound that could easily fill the space without creating unwanted reflections or feedback.
The mounting of the speakers required careful structural consideration. Placement was critical, not only to ensure optimal sound coverage but also to maintain the visual integrity of the sanctuary. In addition to speaker installation, our team ran cabling to the mix position, which was located on the gallery above the auditorium floor. Routing these cables was no small feat, requiring coordination with building engineers and deep knowledge of signal path integrity.
The mixing position itself was designed to give operators a full view and accurate audio perspective of the entire space, allowing for precise control during worship services and events.
Building a Full-Fledged Studio: Audio and Video Integration
What made the RCCG City of David project truly unique was the inclusion of a full studio facility built within the church premises. This was not just an afterthought or an add-on—it was a core component of the vision. The studio was designed from the ground up to support both live audio recording and video production.
The studio consisted of three distinct rooms:
-
A live recording room capable of hosting vocalists, instrumentalists, or small ensembles.
-
An audio control room featuring a professional mixing console and monitoring setup.
-
A video control room, equipped to handle live feeds from cameras positioned throughout the auditorium.
To connect the auditorium with the studio, we ran multiple lines from the front of house system directly into the studio, allowing for high-quality multitrack recordings of live services. On the video side, we created dedicated camera points on the floor of the auditorium. These points were wired into the video control room, allowing camera operators to capture dynamic angles without the need for wireless transmission or excessive cable clutter.
A Lasting Impact: RCCG City of David as a Blueprint
The success of this project went beyond immediate technical results. It served as a benchmark for similar installations across Nigeria and the broader West African region. Churches began to realize the value of integrated audiovisual infrastructure, not only for in-house quality but also for content creation, streaming, and archiving.
Personally, this project cemented my working relationship with stakeholders in Nigeria and established trust with both international suppliers and local partners. It was the starting point for what would become years of successful collaboration in various high-profile church and corporate environments.
The attention to detail, long-term thinking, and spiritual purpose that defined the RCCG City of David project remain a source of pride for me and my team to this day. It’s one thing to complete a technical installation, but it’s another thing entirely to help elevate worship experiences for thousands through the power of sound and vision.
