A Collaboration with Brave Group: Creating a Practical, Professional Voiceover Space

At Techmin, each project represents more than a technical task, it’s an opportunity to help our clients improve the way they work. This approach guided our collaboration with Brave Group, an innovative marketing agency located in Hyde Park, Johannesburg. The company wanted to enhance the way it produced voiceovers for its advertising and content campaigns, by developing a well-integrated, in-house recording environment.

Brave Group’s work spans a wide range of marketing disciplines. As an award-winning collective of agencies, they provide services that include strategic planning, creative development, media buying, content creation, public relations, design, and production. Within these areas, the creation of audio-visual content plays an essential role, particularly the narration and voiceovers that bring advertising concepts to life.

Previously, the team often relied on external facilities to record voiceovers. While effective, that approach meant additional scheduling, travel, and costs. To streamline production and maintain control over creative quality, Brave Group decided to build an internal voiceover recording studio next to their existing media-editing suite.

Brave Group

Their goal was straightforward: a compact, well-connected, and professional space that supported both recording and post-production, all within their existing footprint. Techmin was commissioned to design and implement the installation.

Understanding the Vision and Designing the Solution

Before work began, our team met with Brave Group’s production staff to understand how they operated and what they needed from the new space. The studio had to:

  1. Integrate with the current editing suite without major structural changes.

  2. Provide clear communication between the talent in the recording booth and the editors in the adjacent room.

  3. Maintain a tidy, professional appearance consistent with the rest of the office.

  4. Support reliability and ease of use, allowing internal teams to operate it without outside technical support.

These objectives shaped the design from the beginning. We aimed for a solution that combined professional-grade functionality with straightforward operation and low visual impact.

The selected approach involved converting a second, adjacent room into a dedicated voiceover booth while using the existing media-editing room as the control space. This arrangement allowed the two rooms to work together as a single unit.

To achieve clear communication and signal flow between them, we created custom six-way connector boxes. Each box was designed to handle the full range of required connections: microphone input, headphone monitoring, and video signal sharing, while keeping cabling organised and accessible.

Each wall box included:

  • Two XLR connectors for microphones, ensuring clean audio input and output.

  • Two TRS (¼-inch jack) connectors for headphone monitoring.

  • One HDMI port to transmit visual information between the rooms.

The same configuration was installed on both sides to provide a mirrored setup. This made it possible for either room to send or receive audio and video signals as needed.

The connectors were mounted in custom plates, fitted neatly into the wall for a clean appearance. Cables were routed through conduits inside the wall cavity, so that no external wires were visible. The result was a simple and durable interface that supports frequent use without cluttering the workspace.

Integration and Workflow

To ensure smooth collaboration between the two rooms, we also installed a wall-mounted monitor in the editing suite. The display serves multiple purposes: monitoring the talent in the booth, reviewing video playback, or displaying scripts and prompts during sessions.

All cabling for this system was reticulated within the wall, keeping the space organised and consistent with Brave Group’s modern office design. Each connection was tested to confirm stable performance, and labels were added for clarity so internal staff could manage the system easily.

The setup allows editors and producers to communicate naturally with the person recording, review takes in real-time, and make quick adjustments when needed. The HDMI connection also supports playback synchronisation, which is useful when matching voiceovers to visual content such as television or online video advertisements.

This approach created a practical link between creativity and technology. Instead of functioning as separate areas, the two rooms now operate as a cohesive production unit that supports faster turnaround and higher consistency across projects.

Sound and Space

Although the client’s main focus was on connectivity and usability, we also considered how the new recording space would sound. Even modest acoustic adjustments can make a significant difference in recording clarity and comfort.

Our team evaluated the room’s dimensions, surfaces, and potential sound reflections. Where needed, we recommended subtle acoustic treatments that reduced echo and ensured a balanced vocal tone. These refinements allowed the Brave Group team to capture narration that is clear and natural without extensive post-processing.

At the same time, attention was paid to the room’s visual simplicity. The studio remains aligned with Brave Group’s design aesthetic, clean, modern, and functional. Nothing about the installation distracts from the work being done inside it.

Attention to Detail

Every element of the installation was executed with long-term reliability in mind. All wiring was tested for both continuity and interference resistance. Connectors were selected for their durability, ensuring that frequent plugging and unplugging would not degrade signal quality.

Cable labelling and routing diagrams were provided to Brave Group’s internal team, allowing them to manage the studio confidently without external assistance. The finished result is a space that looks orderly, works efficiently, and can be maintained easily over time.

The work also reflected Techmin’s general approach: focus on precision, minimise disruption to the client’s daily operations, and deliver solutions that integrate smoothly with existing infrastructure.

Connectivity and Communication

The dual-room configuration relies on constant interaction between people working in each space. Our design made this communication effortless.

The HDMI link provides a visual connection that enables natural direction and feedback, particularly valuable for creative collaboration. It allows producers to display video references or timing guides, and gives voice artists a clear view of visual cues during recording.

Audio and headphone connections through the XLR and TRS ports provide a direct, high-quality signal path with no noticeable delay. Together, these systems allow recording sessions to run as efficiently as those in much larger facilities.

To maintain signal integrity, every connection was noise-isolated and properly grounded. The internal cabling layout was mapped and documented for future upgrades or maintenance.

The overall outcome is a compact but highly functional voiceover environment, one that supports professional work within the limited space available, without unnecessary complexity.

The Presentation Room

Alongside the studio installation, Brave Group also requested a small but important improvement in their presentation room. The goal was to mount a display screen to support meetings, client presentations, and collaborative reviews.

While a straightforward task, it required careful planning to maintain the same tidy aesthetic found elsewhere in the office. All cables were channelled within the drywall, running from below the table to the area behind the screen. This ensured that no visible wires interrupted the clean lines of the wall or workspace.

The new setup allows for seamless connection of laptops and other media devices, improving both appearance and usability. It complements the professionalism of the office environment and aligns with the standards maintained throughout the rest of the facility.

Working Approach

From the earliest planning stages, we worked closely with Brave Group’s internal creative and technical teams. Open communication allowed design decisions to be made quickly and confidently, with minimal disruption to ongoing projects.

Throughout the process, we emphasised collaboration and practicality. Every step, from cable routing to wall-box placement, was discussed with the people who would use the space daily. This ensured that the final outcome reflected their workflow rather than imposing an external system on it.

The installation was completed efficiently and safely, with respect for the client’s time and environment. Testing and quality checks were carried out before handover to confirm that all components performed reliably and met the specifications agreed upon at the start.

Outcome and Benefits

The completed voiceover and presentation installations have provided Brave Group with tangible operational benefits.

  • Creative flexibility: Recordings can now be done in-house, allowing for immediate revisions and consistent quality across campaigns.

  • Time efficiency: Eliminating the need to book external studios shortens production timelines and simplifies scheduling.

  • Cost management: Over time, internal recording reduces outsourcing expenses while providing full creative control.

  • Professional presentation: The upgraded meeting room enhances the way the team collaborates and presents work to clients.

The combined effect of these improvements is a more streamlined production environment, one that supports Brave Group’s creative output and reflects their professional standards.

Reflections on the Collaboration

This project illustrates how small, focused upgrades can have a meaningful impact on everyday workflow. By converting an unused room into a well-equipped recording space and refining a presentation area, Brave Group has strengthened its in-house production capability.

For Techmin, the project demonstrated the value of clear communication and careful planning. Rather than focusing on scale or complexity, success came from attention to the details that matter most: connection quality, ease of use, and visual order.

The collaboration was marked by shared purpose and trust. The Brave Group team brought a strong understanding of their creative needs, while Techmin provided technical guidance to meet them efficiently. The result is a facility that supports the agency’s ongoing work in a practical, reliable way.

Conclusion
