When approaching the creation of a world-class private cinema, it is essential to consider not only the visual and auditory features, but also the atmosphere, comfort, and multi-purpose functionality that will elevate the experience far beyond that of a traditional commercial theatre. This was the vision behind Bridgenorth Cinema, a bespoke space meticulously designed and engineered by Benjamin Pro Audio as part of the client’s existing recording studio, yet also as a standalone facility. While the studio demanded precision, technical expertise, and professional workflow design, the cinema offered an opportunity to blend these same principles with ultimate leisure, ambience, and immersion.

Designing the Ultimate Experience at Bridgenorth Cinema

Benjamin Pro Audio collaborated closely with the client to design a space that not only meets the technical demands of high-end audio and video systems but also reflects the warmth and ambience required for a relaxing, homely atmosphere.

A key highlight of the cinema is its 185-inch acoustically transparent projection screen. This screen allows major audio components, specifically the left, right, center, and subwoofer PMC speakers, to be placed directly behind it. This configuration provides a seamless and accurate audio-visual alignment, mirroring the speaker placement standards used in professional cinemas. Viewers are treated to a soundstage that feels wonderfully natural and anchored precisely to the on-screen action.

Complementing the advanced audio setup is a 4K-capable Epson laser projector, chosen for its reliability, sharpness, colour accuracy, and quiet operation. The projector delivers crystal-clear visuals with impressive contrast and vibrant tones, ensuring every film is showcased exactly as the creators intended. In many ways, the visual performance exceeds what most commercial theatres are capable of producing, making movie nights not just enjoyable, but beautifully cinematic.

The room is configured for Dolby Atmos, utilising a 7.2.4 surround sound layout. This includes seven ear-level speaker channels, four subwoofers, and two height channels, allowing sound to move freely and precisely throughout the three-dimensional space. Whether it’s a thunderstorm rumbling overhead or the subtle ambience of a bustling city street, the system brings audio to life with remarkable clarity and spatial depth. The immersive quality transforms every film into a sensory experience, one that envelops the audience from all directions.

Behind the scenes, the room’s acoustic behaviour is carefully controlled. TMB Acoustics handled the acoustic treatment, selecting materials and colours that not only optimise sound quality but also contribute to an inviting, atmospheric interior. The acoustic panels are strategically positioned to manage reflections, eliminate unwanted resonances, and enhance the overall frequency balance. Yet despite their technical purpose, they blend perfectly with the room’s visual design.

Acoustic Treatment, Interior Design and Integration at Bridgenorth Cinema

In designing the interior of Bridgenorth Cinema, comfort and style were given as much importance as acoustic accuracy and technical functionality. The client’s interior designer envisioned a warm, inviting environment that encourages relaxation and social enjoyment, and this vision informed the layout and furniture choices throughout the space.

Central to this approach was the installation of multiple tiers of lounging couches, arranged across three distinct floor levels. This tiered design not only mirrors the feel of a commercial cinema, offering each viewer a prime line of sight to the screen, but also introduces a homely, laid-back mood. Guests are encouraged to settle into soft, supportive seating that enhances long movie sessions without ever compromising comfort. The blend of professional cinema structure with residential luxury creates a perfect balance between sophistication and warmth.

Bridgenorth Cinema’s acoustics were enhanced further by integrating the side surround speakers directly into the acoustic wall panels. By recessing these speakers, the design maintains a clean, uninterrupted aesthetic while preserving the optimal placement required for accurate surround sound imaging. This approach eliminates the visual clutter that can sometimes accompany home theatre installations, ensuring that the acoustic treatments and the technology coexist harmoniously within the architectural lines of the room.

Height, or overhead speakers used for the Dolby Atmos system, are secured with internally designed and engineered speaker brackets, also from Benjamin Pro Audio. These bespoke brackets ensure stability, correct angling, and flexibility for future adjustments if needed. It is solutions like these that reflect the intentionality behind every detail of the cinema’s construction. Nothing has been left to chance; even the smaller components have been customised to achieve the best possible performance without disrupting the aesthetic integrity of the space.

Technology integration was equally important. The client requested an Apple TV streaming unit to access online films and series with ease. This addition provides instant access to various streaming platforms, enabling the client and their guests to explore thousands of titles without leaving the comfort of the cinema. The simplicity and reliability of Apple’s interface complement the high-end environment, ensuring smooth browsing and playback.

Bridgenorth Cinema’s advanced processing and amplification systems ensure that the Dolby Atmos setup performs at its full potential. A high-performance Integra AV Receiver manages the decoding and distribution of the audio channels, while Linear Research amplification drives the speakers with precision, clarity, and ample power. In a room already treated for optimal acoustics, this combination results in audio reproduction that is both detailed and dynamic, providing a listening experience worthy of a professional post-production studio, but tailored for private enjoyment.

Multi-Room Flexibility and Studio Integration at Bridgenorth Cinema

One of the most innovative aspects of Bridgenorth Cinema is its dual-purpose design, a feature that significantly expands its functionality beyond traditional home cinema use. The engineers at Benjamin Pro Audio ensured that the cinema could integrate seamlessly with the main recording studio, allowing it to serve as a fully operational live room when needed.

Through strategically installed network points, the cinema is connected directly to the main studio control room. This connection allows audio signals, communication channels, and monitoring paths to flow effortlessly between spaces. When required, the couches can be removed to clear the floor area, transforming the cinema into a spacious studio environment.

Once reconfigured, the room can accommodate a band, choir, or acoustic instrumental ensemble, benefiting from the superb acoustics originally designed for film playback. The treated walls, controlled reflections, and balanced frequency response make it an excellent environment for capturing high-quality recordings. This dual functionality allows engineers and musicians to take advantage of a unique recording space that feels comfortable, atmospheric, and maintains a high standard of acoustic performance.

By extending the recording capabilities into the cinema, the facility can support full band live recordings across five different rooms, including the cinema itself. This flexibility is invaluable for multi-instrument sessions, large vocal groups, or projects requiring isolated sound sources while maintaining creative cohesion among the performers. Artists can interact, collaborate, and engage in real-time, even when spread across different rooms in the facility.
