Upgrading Sound and Preserving Legacy at NG Kerk Coligny

There is something deeply special about working in South Africa’s historic churches—spaces that carry the weight of generations of worship and community. One such opportunity came when we were contacted by the leadership of NG Kerk Coligny, a church founded in 1914 and rich in architectural and spiritual heritage. The church’s leadership had growing concerns about the quality of their in-house sound system as well as the audio quality of their online streaming services. This request for assistance marked the beginning of a meaningful relationship between Techmin and NG Kerk Coligny, one rooted in respect for tradition and a vision for modern, reliable technology.

Assessing the Needs at NG Kerk Coligny: Equipment and Cabling Challenges

Our first step was conducting a comprehensive inspection of the existing sound setup. It became clear that some of the issues stemmed from outdated and, in some cases, misapplied equipment. Additionally, the cabling used to connect the loudspeakers was significantly undersized for the distances involved. Thin cables can degrade sound quality due to resistance and signal loss, particularly in large venues like this.

We recommended an upgrade to our trusted 2.5mm speaker cabling—well-suited for long cable runs and capable of preserving audio clarity. It’s a reliable standard that we often deploy in churches, offering a balance between cost-effectiveness and durability.

We also noted that the church’s main sanctuary had good sound coverage at the front and balcony sections, but the area beneath the balcony suffered from audio dead zones. To address this, we proposed and installed a pair of Audac satellite speakers, specifically aimed at filling these gaps. With these in place, the coverage was greatly improved, ensuring that every member of the congregation, regardless of where they were seated, could hear the service clearly.

Discreet and Safe Cable Installation at NG Kerk Coligny

When working in sacred spaces such as NG Kerk Coligny, we place a high priority on maintaining aesthetic integrity. Audio cabling must be as unobtrusive as possible—not just for visual purposes, but also to preserve the focus and reverence of the space. Our team took great care to route the cables discreetly, running much of the infrastructure through the under-balcony ceiling.

This was no small feat. The ceiling spaces were tight and difficult to access, but through strategic planning and teamwork, we completed the cable runs efficiently. We also ensured that all cabling was secured and safe, reducing trip hazards and maintaining compliance with building and safety standards.

Upgrading the Audio System: Mixing Console and Amplification

The existing analog mixing console had reached the end of its life, showing faults that weren’t worth repairing. We replaced it with an Allen & Heath QU-16 digital console, a powerful yet user-friendly unit. This digital desk provides 16 mono inputs and allows for future expansion—a smart investment for any church planning events, services, or musical performances down the line.

Although the main amplifier initially appeared to be functioning, further testing revealed the need for a replacement. We opted to install Samson Servo 300 and 600 amplifiers, delivering robust and clean power to both the main sanctuary and the new under-balcony speakers.

To streamline streaming and recording, we added a Tascam US-2x2HR audio interface for a reliable and simple connection between the console and the computer. While the QU-16 is capable of multi-track recording via USB, we wanted to prioritize ease-of-use for the volunteers and ministry team handling the tech.

Supporting Streaming and Training at NG Kerk Coligny

Recognizing the growing need for streaming services in today’s digital age, we replaced the church’s existing desktop with a Lenovo system paired with a 24-inch Mecer monitor. This combination ensures optimal performance for live streaming, presentations, and day-to-day operations.

Of course, installing new equipment is only part of the solution. We also provided hands-on training to the sound team and church staff—including the minister himself. Transitioning from analog to digital mixing can seem intimidating at first, but after covering the core concepts, routing, and key digital workflows, the team quickly found their footing. With its intuitive layout and modern capabilities, the QU-16 gave them confidence and new possibilities for service production.

A Grateful Experience in Coligny

Wrapping up the installation, we enjoyed a pleasant stay at Hotel Coligny—a modest but charming establishment in this small town. The warm hospitality, great food, and peaceful atmosphere added to the overall satisfaction of this project.

The collaboration with NG Kerk Coligny was a fulfilling reminder of how technology can enhance worship experiences without compromising tradition. At Techmin, we’re proud to play a part in helping communities preserve the beauty of their history while embracing the tools of the future.
