From Stereo to Spatial Sound: Dolby Atmos Upgrade at Oskido Studios

In the fast-evolving world of audio production, staying ahead of the curve requires a willingness to embrace change and invest in innovation. That’s exactly what DJ Oskido did when he decided to upgrade his renowned recording and mastering facility in Midrand. Originally built in 2019 as a stereo studio, the space—widely known today as Oskido Studios—was set for a major leap forward: the transition to Dolby Atmos.

It was a pleasure for our team at Techmin to return to this creative hub and be part of its next evolution. Having completed the original cabling installation during the studio’s initial build, we were thrilled to be invited back by Dobie, who was managing and facilitating the Atmos upgrade. This opportunity not only highlighted our long-standing relationship with the studio, but also our reputation for reliable, forward-thinking technical work in the audio industry.

Engineering Immersive Audio: Dolby Atmos Integration at Oskido Studios

The Dolby Atmos upgrade at Oskido Studios brought with it both excitement and complexity. Unlike traditional stereo setups, Atmos provides a 3D audio experience that allows sound to move fluidly around the listener, offering a deeper, more immersive listening environment. To achieve this, a carefully calculated speaker configuration is essential.

Our contribution involved the supply and installation of custom-manufactured speaker brackets to securely mount all necessary speakers, including the Adam Audio left, right, and center monitors, as well as the height and surround speakers. These components formed the core of the studio’s new 7.4.1 Atmos layout, which includes seven surround speakers, four overhead speakers, and a single subwoofer.

Driving this system is the Dolby-certified Audient Oria Immersive Audio Interface, a powerful unit designed to deliver precise multichannel audio to every speaker in the room. Since the setup utilized powered speakers, we needed to run both audio signal cables and power lines to each speaker position. This required detailed planning and precision execution to avoid interfering with the studio’s acoustic design or workflow.

Cabling with Care: Integrating with Oskido Studios’ Existing Acoustics

One of the most significant technical challenges of the project was the integration of new cabling into an already acoustically treated environment. The original acoustic treatment for Oskido Studios was expertly handled by TMB Acoustics in 2019, and it still functions effectively today. The studio walls are lined with precision-placed acoustic panels, optimized for both recording and mastering tasks.

Fortunately, the team at TMB Acoustics had the foresight to leave room for future expansion during the initial build. This made it possible for us to carefully route new cables—both signal and power—behind the existing acoustic panels without compromising the sound treatment or disrupting the studio’s design integrity. It was a perfect example of smart planning meeting technical expertise, resulting in a seamless upgrade with minimal structural intrusion.

A Space for Sound, Skill, and the Next Generation

While the Dolby Atmos upgrade marked a significant technical leap, the vision behind Oskido Studios extends well beyond its equipment. The facility continues to serve as a space for growth, learning, and community. One of its standout features is its commitment to empowering young audio engineers and music producers, offering them a platform to develop their skills and gain hands-on experience in a world-class recording environment.

The integration of Dolby Atmos adds an entirely new dimension to what the studio can offer aspiring talent. Now, young creatives can engage with next-generation audio technologies and production standards that are increasingly in demand globally. For many, this space could become the launchpad to careers in film scoring, immersive gaming soundtracks, or high-fidelity music production.

Building on Legacy, Looking to the Future

Returning to Oskido Studios for this upgrade wasn’t just about installing hardware—it was about building on a legacy and helping it evolve into something even greater. It speaks to the importance of future-ready studio design and the value of lasting professional relationships.

At Techmin, we’re proud to play a continuing role in shaping creative spaces that not only meet current technical standards but also anticipate the needs of tomorrow. This project represents the kind of collaboration we value deeply: one that combines technical expertise, acoustic insight, and a shared passion for exceptional sound.

As immersive audio continues to grow in both demand and popularity, studios like Oskido’s are setting the standard for what’s possible in South African music and media production. We’re honored to have contributed to this exciting chapter—and we look forward to the sounds that will soon emerge from this newly upgraded space.
